The Women on the Hill

We’re an odd breed
we women on the hill
tested by the elements
finding ways around
disadvantages
careful where we step
and mindful of the others
we’re an odd breed, indeed

until we find a new baby
is coming to the hill and
we are united - carefully watching
the progress of the young one’s
belly – making casseroles and breads –
Visiting one by one by one
to place a well intentioned hand
on the young one’s belly

It’s a girl, we’ve all decided
while the young couple nest
we rock and dream and plan
for the new one, the new one
and when the time comes
we women on the hill
will be watching
with our casseroles
and our breads
and our hands

We’re an odd breed
we women on the hill
tested by the elements
finding ways around
disadvantages
careful where we step
and mindful of the others
we’re an odd breed indeed.

Just don’t cross us.

I tried to sing the words of your wonderful poem to tune of the Beatle's "Fool On The Hill" and it just didn't fit. I'm going to try Flatt & Scruggs versions of Foggy Mountain Breakdown or Dueling Banjos next.
